Q. What are the child seat requirements, and until what age are they necessary?
A. Drivers are required by law to use a child seat when transporting children under the age of six.
According to Article 71-3, Paragraph 3 of the Road Traffic Act, children under the age of six are required by law to use a child seat. It is also stipulated that for enhanced child safety, the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) recommends the use of child car safety seats for children under 150 cm in height. Therefore, starting from immediately after birth — for example, when leaving the hospital — the use of a child seat is mandatory when traveling by car.
